Capital LTE: “For Our Children, Stop Crystal Spring”

Capital Gazette: Letter to the Editor, April 19, 2016

When we bought a home in Hunt Meadow recently, it was the realization of a long-held dream for my family. I am looking forward to raising my son in this neighborhood for years to come. But that very future is threatened by the proposed Crystal Spring development and its proposed expansion into Mas Que Farm.

As a Hunt Meadow property owner, I oppose any further development that would increase traffic on Forest Drive and Spa Road. Traffic on Forest Drive is already a mess. It’s slow at best during rush hour, and it can shut down the entire city of Annapolis if there’s an accident. Our local schools are already overcrowded. And the development would mean tearing down the last remaining natural forest we have in Annapolis.

The land at Mas Que Farm was supposed to be protected from proposed new development by a conservation easement. But no such easement has been established, and recent proposals from the developers show them expanding into Mas Que Farm, and further increasing the congestion and damaging the environment immediately adjacent to my neighborhood.

I was so happy to buy our new home. But I am nervous for the future. Plenty of Annapolitans oppose this development, but I see no real effort to stop it. Please, in the name of our children, stop it. I don’t want more traffic headaches. I don’t want to have to teach my son that Forest Drive is named after the trees that used to be there.
